Successful mobile apps are digital products that typically provide a service or experience that other mobile apps don’t or that provide a service or experience better than similar, competing apps do.
Digital products are intangible goods that come in digital forms. In addition to mobile apps, digital products include online games, electronic tickets, music, fonts, online subscriptions, and software.
The audience and marketplace for digital products are enormous and continue to grow. For this reason, finding a way to contribute to the digital marketplace by, for instance, creating a mobile app, can feel like a daunting task.
But if you have good ideas for mobile app, and if you know how to bring these ideas to fruition with, say, the help of a mobile app agency, you can certainly create mobile apps and digital products that will contribute to the digital product marketplace.
One of the most straightforward mobile apps to conceive of are solution-based mobile apps. First, you identify a problem. Second, you figure out how to solve the problem via a mobile app.
But one of the most exciting kinds of apps is gaming apps, and if you have an idea, then, well, you might be on your way to creating the next new pinball.
Gaming Mobile Apps
Gaming mobile apps are some of the most addictive apps in the mobile app marketplace. When users get hooked, they may play up to dozens of times per day for long stretches of time.
In other words, some gaming apps are addictive.
Coming up with a gaming app is not unlike coming up with a board game, a sport, a video game, or a children’s game such as duck, duck, goose.
It’s also quite like coming up with pinball.
A Very Brief History of Pinball
You could trace the lineage of pinball way back to games like bocci ball. But Steve Kordek, an engineer born in 1911 and who died in 2012 at age 100, is often credited as the inventor of pinball.
In the 1930s, Kordek revised a version of what was then called a “pin game.” To play, you needed to release a ball with a plunger and then direct the ball through an ecosystem of pins to reach the goal by shaking and tilting the table.
Later, in the 1940s, Kordek revised his revision of the pin game by creating the standard two-flipper machine on a tilted surface that we think of when we think of the pinball machine today.
From then on, pinball technology became increasingly advanced. It became an arcade game, then a computer game, and now you can play pinball on mobile apps.
What’s The Point of This Story?
The point of this story is that to succeed today in the mobile gaming app marketplace; it helps to be a bit like Steve Kordek.
In other words, it helps to create a concept for a game that’s one of three things:
- A novel idea that does not yet exist
- An entertaining variation on an already existing game
- A recreation of an already existing game in a different form (e.g. on a computer, a gaming console, or a mobile app)
- canvas tcisd
Steve Kordek did all three of these things, but you probably only have to do one to create a fun new mobile gaming app.
