I already owned iPhones years ago, yet I did not find out about their place of manufacture until last month. iPhone Origin Country, spoiler it is not what you think. In a few seconds I shall tell you what I have learned and how to trace where yours is from, in case you have one.
What is the location of iPhones?
The fact is your iPhone was not made in one nation. All iPhones used are designed in California by Apple, with the manufacturing factories situated elsewhere.
I inquired and was informed that over 80 percent of iPhones are assembled in China, particularly in the vast Foxconn plants. The plant within Zhengzhou consists of more than 300,000 employees. However, much to my surprise, I got to know that my iPhone 15 Pro has been built in India.
Apple has silently diversified to other locations. India currently produces newer models, with the Pro variants beginning with an iPhone 14. Other models are made by Vietnam and Brazil.
How to verify the country of origin of the iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Find the Model Number.
- Once it is tapped, the code is extended.
- Find the two letters that come before the slash (/).
The two letters will inform you about the area in which the iPhone was manufactured. Mine was HN/A, that is, India.
iPhone Country Codes
Here is a very simple guide; these are the ones I came across:

The number of country codes is over 50. They mostly have minor dissimilarities. Chinese models can be equipped with two physical SIMs; US models typically with eSIM.
What Your Model Number Means
It means something. If your model is MYWK3AE/A:
- MYWK3 = product identifier
- AE = UAE/Middle East region
- /A = standard retail version
I did this with the iPhone 16 Pro Max of a friend of mine. The code he used was A3296, the code that Apple enumerates as the international variant. Other regions have various numbers, such as A3084 in the US and A3297 in mainland China.
Why this is of actual importance
You may think that this is mere trivia, though it is important:
- Warranty: Information on warranty depends on the region in which you are. Purchasing an AE phone in Dubai and then relocating to the US, Apple will not serve you.
- Features: Phones that are sold in other countries possess different features. E.g., the models of Japan are unable to decide to put the camera sound off due to the law of privacy. Chinese models can use various bands of 5G.
- Resale: The imported phones are generally at low prices, as people want a phone that was destined for their market.
Production was spread right away, which is the result of the manufacturing reality.
Manufacturing Reality
Tim Cook came to power in 2011. Prior to that, all of the iPhones were produced exclusively by Foxconn in China. iPhone 4s was the first phone to be produced based on the collaboration between two companies, Foxconn and Pegatron.
The supply chain is global. In South Korea, most likely, your exhibition is Samsung or LG. The A-chip originates from TSMC Taiwan. Corning is a US-based manufacturer of Gorilla Glass. The rest of the parts are manufactured in the Czech Republic, Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan.
It is created in a single location but is a very international product.
Fast Checks
Before purchasing my second-hand iPhone, I made sure to check the model number to verify its authenticity:
Compare the code with the support standby of Apple. Ensure that the area does not change with the place of purchase. Keep an eye on such codes as BR (made in Brazil) and BZ (made in China, sold to the Brazilian market).
Other sellers would attempt to sell refurbished or gray-market phones. The model number will present itself as incorrect.
The Bottom Line
It is not just made in China. The origin code of your phone. It informs you of the target market, potential functionality, and the area of service. You can lock it in a minute, and it might prevent your inconvenience afterward.
My model is HN, so it was produced in India but was developed in California, using various countries components. That is essentially all new iPhones.
