What is active noise cancellation (ANC)? Noise cancelling Earbuds
Active noise cancellation started with over-ear and on-ear headphones and is now found in headphones on both cables and wireless devices. As first word of the term suggests, active noise cancellation requires electricity, as opposed to passive noise reduction. The battery power powers ANC circuits that use microphone signal currents to produce a living, inverse signal of the ambient noise. Just as negative number added to its positive equivalent is zero, the goal here is to compensate for the actual ambient noise by inverse sound waves.
Works? Well, that depends on the manufacturer, but also on the noise. Even a good ANC is usually much more efficient at changing low to medium frequencies, especially with unchanging sounds like drones like the crash of an airplane and a train, or the rumor of an AC generator. However, these sounds are managed through a combination of active circuitry and an ear seal.
Speaking of ear seals: with passive noise suppression (or passive noise isolation or passive noise reduction) the ear canal is physically closed to block the surrounding sound. This method does not involve microphones or batteries, but it is more effective than active noise cancellation in many ways as it helps to change the frequencies on the board. Wrong noise suppression: what can be avoided?
Lower quality ANCs often reproduce high frequency sound – such as white noise or band – that masks some of the higher frequencies that cannot be eliminated. The easiest way to determine if this is happening is to activate the ANC in a completely quiet environment. If it appears to be making a noise, add it. That being said, most of the pairs we tested contribute to some extent, but the lower the quality of the ANC, the clearer it becomes.
Another aspect of the low-quality ANC – especially with headphones and wireless headphones – is the difference in how the music (or audio) sounds when activated.

How much should you pay for noise cancellation of real wireless headphones?
Unfortunately, real wireless technology combined with high-quality drivers and compatibility with high-quality Bluetooth codecs, such as AptX or AAC, is already relatively expensive. Models delivered on these fronts usually cost over $ 100. If you use ANC, you can expect prices to be much higher.
It can be assumed that real wireless headphones that provide audio quality and ANC can cost more than $ 150 and closer to $ 200. As you can see, our current favorite pair, Apple AirPods Pro, is among the most expensive.

Best overall: Apple AirPods Pro
AirPods Pro offers noise cancellation capabilities almost as powerful as the Sony WF-1000XM3 and sound as good. The interesting thing is that Apple has equipped AirPods Pro with a lot of new technologies. There is Adaptive EQ, a kind of hearing test with which you can find the most suitable silicone plugs. The mode of transparency is quite phenomenal. And they have Apple’s H1 chip for easy pairing for the iPhone. These are also Apple’s first breathable wireless headphones (IPX4). So you should not have problems training with them.

The best noise cancellation: Sony WF-1000XM3
The Sony WF-1000XM3 is truly the wireless “OG” headset with active noise cancellation, yet offers the most effective noise cancellation features of any wireless headset on the market. Their noise canceling capabilities don’t match the level of the company’s Sony WH-1000XM3, the company’s noise canceling headphones, but we wouldn’t expect it again. In addition, they are still one of the loudest wireless headphones on this list. If you’re looking for a downside, the only thing is that the charging case is quite large.

Best budget: Amazon Echo Buds
Echo Buds are the cheapest wireless noise canceling headset. Or rather, they’re using Bose’s Active Noise Reduction technology, which Bose says isn’t as good as the Active Noise Canceling technology in their own headphones (and will be included in Bose Noing Canceling Earbuds 700) , when “was introduced in 2020”). Still, the ability to suppress Echo Buds noise is surprisingly good. I think the secret is that in addition to noise reduction technology, Echo Buds also offers a more environmentally friendly fit than most others and creates a natural, passive, noise-canceling seal. The disadvantage of these headphones feels very plastic. To get most out of these headphones, you should use the Alexa app, which can be confusing for the uninitiated.
