What Makes Good Logo Design?

A logo is the most important branding tool for a company. It’s what makes your business stand out from all of the others and helps you to build recognition with your customers. A good logo design should be simple, memorable, and scalable, but it can take time and effort to create one that encompasses these three qualities.

Most importantly, a good logo should have some sort of relevance to what company it represents – if not directly then at least indirectly by suggesting quality and uniqueness through its shape or colors. A good example is Coca-Cola’s emblem which features two intertwining letters “C” for Coke with an arc above them that resembles both halves of a bottle cap.

Tips for crafting a good logo design

Do you want your logo to be memorable and stand the test of time? Here are five qualities that make a good logo design.

1. It should be simple, yet unique

The simpler a design is, the easier it will be for customers to remember. The more complex a design becomes, however, the less likely people will remember it or even care about it in the first place.

A good example of this is the Nike swoosh logo. It’s a simple mark comprised of just four lines, but it still stands out as unique and almost universally recognized as a symbol for Nike.

2. It should be versatile enough to scale well in various sizes and media forms

Your logo must look great not only when it’s printed on a business card or sign, but also when displayed digitally as an app icon, print ad, billboard sign, type-based web banner, social media cover photo, truck decal — you get the idea. The more size and media options that are available to display your brand image, the better chance customers have at recognizing it from across the room or from across town.

3. It should be timeless, not trendy

A trend-driven design is more likely to feel dated or “tacky” a few years from now. The world of graphic design is constantly shifting and evolving as styles come and go, so it’s best to avoid a logo that feels too trendy or overused because it won’t have the staying power of a timeless design.

4. It shouldn’t require any explanation or meaning to be understood by its viewers

While your company name might suggest certain qualities of your brand, you don’t want customers to have to guess at what your business does or stands for just because your logo isn’t clear about it either at first glance or after some brief explanation from the person who designed it.

5. It should be versatile enough to work well in a variety of color schemes

Your logo design isn’t necessarily going to come together exactly the way you imagined it when you were signing off on your final selection, so make sure it’s flexible enough to look good when paired with different background colors, or when rendered in grayscale for print purposes.

A good logo design will help your company grow. You want a logo that is crisp, clean, and easy to read at any size or on any background color it may be displayed against.
