Which games are cross-platform multiplayer?

Ever been in a situation where there’s a brand new multiplayer game you want to play with your mates… but the game is exclusive to one platform. It’s been an annoying part of online gaming for a long time. Thankfully, cross-platform multiplayer games are becoming the norm! A lot of games now let PC players play against players on the current generation of games consoles.

While it’d be tough for developers to have their games run on every platform, most games run on more than enough. We’ve compiled a list of the top cross-platform multiplayer games that anyone with a gaming PC can play with their console chums.

Call of Duty: Warzone

cross-platform multiplayer

Price: Free

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

The Call of Duty franchise has been the go-to multiplayer shooter for many years. Now with Call of Duty: Warzone you can play an intense battle royale mode completely for free. The game throws 150 players into a huge map and the last man, or team, standing wins! There’s also a progression system where you build up experience points (XP) that you earn from winning games, getting kills and completing in-game challenges. This increases your rank which gets you in-game items and unlocks weapon upgrades.

Not only can you play the game with players on other platforms but you can continue your progression from PC to console. That can come in handy if you fancy a game round a mate’s house and want to earn some XP!

Chivalry 2

Price: £35.99

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

The origins of the first Chivalry game is rooted in PC gaming as it began as a mod for Half-Life 2. Quite unique among other first-person multiplayer games is Chivalry 2’s focus on medieval weaponry. From long swords, bows and arrows to battle axes and many more! What really makes these weapons stand out is that they’re backed by the game’s physics engine that makes swinging and landing a hit on an enemy all the more satisfying. You can even dismember your enemy’s limbs and use them as a weapon against them!

You and your friends can play with up to 64 other players in massive medieval battles and castle sieges! If you’re looking for something completely unique then definitely give Chivalry 2 a go!

Sea of Thieves

Price: £34.99

Platform: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

There’s no adventure game quite like Sea of Thieves. It’s a game that brings any childhood fantasy of being a pirate to life! Although it is a bit limited in terms of crossplay as it’s only available on PC and the Xbox range of consoles. The gameplay sees players gathered into a maximum of four-player crews who man a ship and take to adventures on the seven seas! There are a vast number of missions to take on that have you digging for buried treasure or hunting down the bounties of evil skeleton pirates! The best missions to take on are the Tall Tales that have you following narratives of lost treasure where your crew need to put your heads together to solve puzzles where you’re trapped in a cave that’s filling up with water!

Although it isn’t available on as many consoles as other cross-platform games, it does have the benefit of being on Xbox Game Pass. This means you can pay a monthly subscription and play the game, and hundreds of others, on your PC or Xbox console. You can even carry your save across the two platforms! If you have the chance, grab a few friends and sail across the oceans in Sea of Thieves!

Dead by Daylight

Price: £14.99

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

If you’re tough enough, try out the horror multiplayer game Dead By Daylight. The gameplay has a 4v1 setup, four survivors against one killer. The survivors are tasked with attempting to make an escape from the map while the killer stalks them. It can lead to some properly scary moments when you turn the corner to see a huge monster that you’re almost powerless to stop!

If you’re a horror nut then this game has you covered with the range of classic horror icons you can play as. There’s tons of paid DLC based on Nightmare on Elm Street, Stranger Things, Saw and even horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. There aren’t many multiplayer games like Dead by Daylight so give it a try if you aren’t too scared!

Minecraft

Price: £22.49

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Mobile

By now, Minecraft is as big a name in gaming as Super Mario and it’s been carrying its popularity for years. Part of that is down to it being a cross-platform multiplayer game on a bunch of platforms. The gameplay of Minecraft has you exploring an environment made entirely of cubes where you use the land around you to craft houses and weapons to survive against the creatures that are out to get you! There’s so much to explore that you can get lost mining for materials for hours!

It’s an experience that’s best shared with others so you can have tons of adventures completely unique to your party! However, if you do plan to play cross-platform, make sure you’re playing the Bedrock Edition (Windows 10 edition for PC users) of the game so anyone on consoles or PCs can easily connect to each other’s games. If you haven’t played Minecraft yet, do yourself a favour and try out one of gaming’s modern classics.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Price: £8.99 monthly subscription

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4 & 5

For a long while, it seemed like the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) genre was more or less exclusive to PC. With Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn this experience is available to players across PC and PS4/5 players (sorry Xbox players!). The gameplay has you building your own character and exploring a world filled with over 22 million online players! The game is constantly evolving with the developers adding more expansions that add even more narrative and quests to go on.

If you’re looking to introduce your console mates to their first MMORPG then this is a great place to start! Exploring the world of Final Fantasy on this big scale is an experience you and your friends will never forget!

Playing with everyone

These are just a couple of games that you PC gamers can play together with your friends on consoles. However, console exclusivity is still common so some games may forever be locked away on consoles. Hopefully, all the latest releases will be cross-platform multiplayer games so everyone can play together!
